Mönckebergstraße mixed-use building, Hamburg,
Germany, 2021-2027
Located in the heart of the historic 'Kontorhaus' district of Hamburg, this scheme will house a flagship department store on its lower floors, and a short-stay and long-stay hotel on the upper floors. The building is topped with a communal top floor overlooking the city.
It is designed to be a robust, energy-efficient, and adaptable building. The structure is a hybrid of steel frame and timber/concrete hybrid slabs. The façades are grounded in the strong Hanseatic tradition of robust and elegant brick architecture. The self-supporting facade is detailed to give it a fine textile-like character, with fluted and bull-nose bricks creating a sculptural effect that suggest both solidity and refinement.
