The new MHKA is designed as an open, welcoming space that connects seamlessly with the city, linking the Scheldt quays and South Park, with no threshold and public space freely flowing between the interior and the surrounding area out.

Its form — a plinth and a tower — offers a flexible curatorial structure of interconnected rooms and levels. The tower is inspired by harbour silos and conceived as a new city landmark, its dynamic facade shifting with the light. Below ground, the old lock is repurposed into an atmospheric exhibition space.
At the heart of the museum is The Hangar, a generous exhibition hall and relaxed, accessible space where people can meet and connect with the community. Envisioned as a ‘third place’ it is a vibrant, inclusive space for all designed to invite everyone in.
