To mark the start of the academic year, Stephen Bates led a one-week workshop at the Department of Architecture at the University of Girona. The workshop focused on 'The old ways', the vast, ancient network of routes criss-crossing the Empordà region of Catalonia, 'a landscape of the feet and mind, of pilgrimage and rituals, of stories and ancient traditions that endure in the present'.
Students were invited to design interventions in the landscape to facilitate wayfinding where necessary, creating a humble yet powerful language that dissolves the boundary between the natural and the manmade through the careful choice of materials.
