Jonathan Sergison will take part in a symposium organised by Susanne Gross and Christoph Grafe at the University of Wuppertal "Interior – Thinking architecture from within".
In architectural practice the design of interiors is the professional dominion of a separate specialised branch, often regarded as a competing discipline outside the field of architecture proper. Yet a conclusive definition of spaces that may be described as interiors has proved elusive. Are interiors only spaces inside buildings, or should the public and semi-public spaces in cities be included in the category? Are the large and very large interior spaces in airports of shopping centres interiors in any traditional sense or should new categories be developed for them? Even in its seemingly unquestioned form – the private house – the interior is subject to fundamental changes and needs a new definition of ‘dwelling’ and the ‘domestic’.
